Custom Marble Products: A Sample Approval Checklist
Review custom marble samples for dimensions, natural variation, finish, component fit and packaging before approving a wholesale production order.
Approve a custom marble sample against a written specification, not appearance alone. Check its dimensions, intended function, material variation, finish, component fit and packaging. Record any changes and identify which version is approved before authorizing a bulk order.
Start with a clear sample identity
Give each sample a product reference and revision date. Keep the drawing, material reference and comments together. If a sample demonstrates the shape but uses a substitute material, record that limitation; approval of the shape should not accidentally become approval of the stone.
Photographs help record appearance, but they do not establish weight, surface feel or component fit. Where these affect purchasing decisions, assess a physical sample or agree on appropriate checks with the supplier.
Check dimensions and function together
Measure critical dimensions against the agreed drawing. Place the intended items inside a tray, check that a lid can be handled comfortably, and review base stability on the intended surface. For a display stand, communicate the intended load and placement so the design can be assessed for that use.
Do not assume that a decorative stone vessel is watertight or that a decorative tray is suitable for direct food contact. Those intended uses require a specific material, construction and treatment review. A lamp base approval also does not replace the compliance review for the finished electrical product.
Define acceptable natural variation
Separate natural color and veining variation from damage or workmanship issues. Agree on representative references that show the acceptable range, rather than expecting every piece to reproduce one sample photograph. Record how visible repairs, chips or other disputed features will be assessed.
For a coordinated collection, specify whether the visual approval applies within each set, across the whole shipment or to repeat orders. Discuss how a new stone batch will be reviewed when an exact visual match is not available.
Inspect the finished details
- Edges: shape, comfort and visible condition.
- Surface: agreed finish and consistency in normal viewing conditions.
- Base: stability, underside protection and contact with furniture.
- Components: lids, inserts, pumps, mounting parts or other included fittings.
- Branding: approved artwork, placement and legibility.
For custom assemblies, review the actual proposed components wherever possible. A sample using temporary fittings may leave unresolved work for production.
Approve packaging as part of the product
Review how the product is supported and protected inside its packaging, especially around projecting edges, narrow necks and separate lids. Confirm the retail box, labels, inserts and outer carton requirements. If transit testing is needed, agree on the method and acceptance criteria; a photograph of a packed carton does not demonstrate transit performance.
Our stone export packaging and inspection guide provides further points to include in the discussion.
Close the approval with a written record
List the approved revision, any remaining conditions and who must confirm them. Request a revised sample where a change affects function, construction or a critical visual requirement. Agree on the checks and evidence required before dispatch, including what happens if an item does not meet the agreed specification.
A sample is a reference for production, not proof that every future unit has passed inspection. Keep the approved reference available for repeat orders and review changes in material, components or packaging before accepting them.
